And at the same time, we'll be hosting all-vinyl, all Indian classical music listening sessions. There's some great old music on record, and you'll get to hear some of it from 8 - 11am on these Wednesday mornings.

If this sounds like your kind of morning, you're welcome.

TIME(S): See Below
DATE(S): Thursday, January 26 to Sunday, May 13, 2012

DESCRIPTION
In 1912, Californian state senator, banker, civic leader and arts patron, James Duval Phelan began constructing Montalvo, an ambitious estate nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains that encompasses a Mediterranean-inspired villa and 175 acres of forest, orchards and manicured gardens. Named after Garci Ordóñez de Montalvo, the 16th Century Spanish author who first coined the name California, Montalvo was Phelan’s beloved retreat, a place where he entertained artists, poets, musicians, politicians, soldiers, scholars and cultural figures. Upon his death in 1930, Phelan’s will stated that Montalvo be “maintained as a public park open and used as far as possible for the development of art, literature, music, and architecture by promising students." Over subsequent years, countless individuals have strived to keep this legacy alive, transforming Montalvo into a leading artist residency, arts center, and hiking destination.

DATE(S): MONDAYS

DESCRIPTION:
The Big Love Show hosted by Jack and Princess D ... Slammin' Beats mixed by live in-studio DJs from the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond!

In 1992 I met KZSU's DJ Unknown, and we teamed up to invite some of the top acid-house / deep-house DJs from San Francisco and San Jose to come down to KZSU to play. Our crew organized the first 24-hour on-air marathon of continuous house music mixed by some of the best in the business: Jenö, Markie, Garth, Tony, Rick Preston, Josh, Spun, Harry Who?, and more. A few of these epic marathons under our belts, the show Acid 88 moved on, and so did I. In 1997 I re-joined KZSU and started the Big Love Show in its current form. I discovered a whole generation of house DJs who were also inspired by the dance-music scene of the early '90s. And the "old schoolers" were still around. Since then, the Big Love Show has been bumpin' it every Monday afternoon. Long Live House Music!

Trio Garufa features an international lineup playing classic and modern tango music from Argentina for dancing, including selections from the band’s two CDs as well as Astor Piazzolla’s Nuevo Tango and the timeless golden-age tangos from the Argentine legends of the 1920s-’40s. Accordionist-bandoneon player Adrian Jost grew up in Switzerland, where he played in various bands before falling under the spell of the tango. After moving to San Francisco, he met Argentine-born guitarist Guillermo Garcia in 1999. Their musical association and mutual love of Argentina’s dance music led to Trio Garufa two years later. Bassist Sascha Jacobsen rounds out the group’s classic tango instrumentation.

JANUARY 2012

Saturday, January 28, 2012

EVENT:
[M] Boca Do Rio plus Z’Amico at The Ashkenaz Music and Dance Community
(in City of Berkeley, Alameda County, San Francisco Bay Area, State of California, USA, Earth)

TIME(S): 9pm / 21:00
DATE(S): Saturday, January 28, 2012

DESCRIPTION:
The colorful San Francisco band Boca do Rio makes its Ashkenaz debut playing original Brazilian-based dance music. The group takes its name from the Portuguese "mouth of the river" – the place where myriad streams and sources converge into one powerful, flowing, physical energy. Inspired by the countless Brazilian musicians who came before, Boca do Rio explains its music as "the African diaspora alive through rhythms and pulses – it is the commonality that binds humans to the air we breathe, the food from which we nourish, the water we imbibe, and the love through which we flourish." Kevin Welch is Boca's leader, composer, guitarist, and vocalist. He has lived in the Amazon and became fluent in Portuguese as well as immersed in – and transformed by – samba. In the mid-1990s he started the group Vivendo de Pão, which became a mainstay on San Francisco's club. Welch calls his style música orgânica, music that is explicitly influenced by his connection to Brazil but filtered through the sensibilities of his California base, which he shares with his versatile accompanists and musical partners. Along with Welch, Boca do Rio is Alex Calatayud on pandeiro, bassist John Evans, drummer Scott Johnson and saxophonist Larry De La Cruz.
